Despite its small size, Bermuda boasts a wide variety of sports for both participants and spectators. Among the Island’s most popular sports are cricket and football (soccer) with Bermuda’s national team in each of them finding success on the world stage. Bermuda has produced a number of world-class players in both sports who have gone on to play professionally. The football season is during the winter months while cricket is played from April through September.

Cup Match is an annual 2-day cricket game held on the Thursday and Friday before the first Monday in August. It is the biggest and most popular sports event in Bermuda and it is held in a carnival-like atmosphere. Both days are official holidays with residents and tourists alike crowding to the game which is held between the St. George’s and Somerset teams.

Being a small island in the Atlantic Ocean, it is not surprising that water sports are very popular here as well. There are numerous boating, sailing and yachting events held during the year. Bermuda is also one of the world’s finest destinations for snorkelling and scuba diving, and fishing is a year-round sport as well.

Bermuda is famous for its many beautiful golf courses which are a major attraction for tourists. Golf is played year-round in Bermuda. International Race Weekend is another popular annual event, featuring a number of running races including the Bermuda International Marathon which attracts world-class runners from a variety of countries. It is held in January each year.

Other popular sports in Bermuda include field hockey, rugby, horseback riding, netball and racquet sports. There are also many recreational clubs and leagues organized on the island including those for softball, basketball, volleyball, bowling, motocross, ball hockey, cycling and more.
